The Department of Mathematics seeks applications for a Lecturer in the Discipline of Mathematics. This is a full-time appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful reviews.

Reporting to the chair of the department, the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate level (generally courses whose primary audience are non-majors); train and mentor new Ritt Assistant Professors, postdocs, and graduate student instructors; oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of undergraduate teaching assistants; advise undergraduate students; and develop curriculum and pedagogical materials. In addition, the successful candidate will perform regular reviews of graduate student and postdoctoral instructors, will serve as the primary source for teaching recommendation letters, and will assist in selecting recipients of the department's annual teaching awards. The Lecturer in Discipline will serve as Calculus Director; responsible for coordinating the sections of Calculus, advising students on placement, handling complaints, appointing a course leader for each level of Calculus, and serving as course leader when appropriate.

The Department of Mathematics runs a summer research program for undergraduates each year, which includes an eight-week program on the Columbia campus each summer. This position will provide administrative oversight of the summer research program, including reviewing undergraduate applications, organizing faculty mentors to work with students on research topics, and coordinating administrative issues with the department administration. The successful candidate will also serve as the departmental representative for Summer Session courses. Duties include nominating instructors, coordinating faculty and graduate student teaching assignments and teaching assistants, advising undergraduates on summer course selection, and liaising with the School of Professional Studies to mount the summer undergraduate curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in teaching mathematics at the college level.


Preferred Qualifications

A successful candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, effective leadership, strong team-building skills, pedagogical expertise (including curriculum design), and will have experience supervising a team of teachers.
