Position Description:    

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Data Science at the Assistant Professor rank to commence September 1, 2020 (flexible). Any areas of expertise will be considered, but among the areas of particular interest are: big data, statistical/machine learning, computational statistics, image and text processing, industrial applications, causal inference, spatial statistics, data visualization, uncertainty quantification, and high-dimensional statistics.

Candidates must have a PhD in Statistics or a closely related field, outstanding research record or potential, and evidence of excellence in teaching. We encourage applications from candidates who will engage in collaboration with other scientists who have data and/or work in related research areas. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal, computational, and communication skills.

The primary responsibilities of the position include developing and maintaining an active, externally funded research program; teaching a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in our department; and participating in departmental, university, and professional service. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise students in our Master’s and PhD programs.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is comprised of 18 continuing faculty members in Statistics, and five in Actuarial Science. The department is recognized internationally for its academic excellence and is the new permanent home of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI).
