Position Description:

Brief Summary of Work for this Position The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (http://www.uncw.edu/math) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in mathematics at the assistant professor level starting August 2020. We are seeking faculty with a proven track record of research in theoretical and applied mathematics in areas including but not limited to:1) the broad field of topology or related areas (such as algebraic geometry, algebraic or computational topology, or topological dynamics), and 2) dynamical systems, mathematical probability theory and stochastic processes, mathematical modeling and simulation, or optimization. Outstanding candidates in closely related fields of mathematics who support the Department’s strengths in areas of pure or applied mathematics will be given consideration.

Additionally, expectations for these positions include maintaining a strong research program and providing service to the department and university. The department offers undergraduate programs in mathematics and statistics, and graduate programs in mathematics, statistics, and data science.

Minimum Requirements A doctoral degree in mathematics with research concentrations preferably in topology or related areas, dynamical systems, mathematical probability theory and stochastic processes, mathematical modeling and simulation, or optimization is required at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications Desired qualifications include postdoctoral experience, experience and/or interest in undergraduate and graduate research, the potential to work with existing faculty on research, and teaching experience.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs leading to undergraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, and teacher licensure, as well as a graduate degree in mathematics, a graduate certificate in applied statistics, and a graduate degree in data science, jointly offered with the computer science department. The department consists of 29 faculty members, approximately 20 graduate students/teaching assistants and approximately 90 majors. (http://www.uncw.edu/math ).
