Brief Summary of Work for this Position The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (http://www.uncw.edu/math) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in data science at the assistant professor level starting August 2020.

We are seeking candidates with a research area that complements our data science programs. The chosen candidate will be expected to mentor students engaged in research projects and have the ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in math or statistics, in addition to data science.

Expectations for this position include maintaining a strong research program and providing service to the department and university. The department offers undergraduate programs in mathematics, data science and statistics, and graduate programs in mathematics, statistics, and data science, jointly offered with the computer science department.

Minimum Requirements A doctoral degree in mathematics, statistics or computer science that supports a data science program that focuses on the analysis of data from the interdisciplinary perspectives of applied statistics, computer science, and mathematics is required at the time of appointment.

The program includes instruction in computer algorithms, computer programming, machine learning, quantitative analysis, statistics, trend spotting, and visual analytics. Proficiency in SAS, Python or R is required.

The candidate will also be required to have strong communication skills and the ability to work with our industry partners on student practicums.

Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching in a professional science master’s degree or similar program.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers programs leading to a minor in data science, undergraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, and teacher licensure, as well as a graduate degree in mathematics, a graduate certificate in applied statistics, and a graduate degree in data science, jointly offered with the computer science department. The department consists of 28 faculty members, approximately 20 graduate math students/teaching assistants, 47 graduate data science students and approximately 130 majors.
