Primary Responsibilities
To chair a department with a dedicated faculty and staff which serves the university community as a whole. To provide the leadership and vision necessary to grow and enhance the department’s academic programs. To fulfill the roles and responsibilities of a chairperson as defined in the Faculty Handbook (https://semo.edu/facultysenate/handbook/index.html). 

Chairperson Assignment:
The workload in the department will include teaching six credit hours per regular term in the area of expertise and six hours devoted to administrative responsibilities. Administrative responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Administration of 23 full-time faculty and staff members, and approximately 65 undergraduate and graduate students
  • Administration and oversight of undergraduate and graduate programs in Mathematics
  • Administration and oversight of Math pathway courses for all majors on campus
  • Officially representing the department's interests both on-campus as well as off-campus
  • Administration of facilities, personnel and budget
  • Demonstration of leadership in keeping with the University's mission and strategic plan
  • Developing strategies for recruiting and retaining students
  • Ensuring that the needs of students are met
  • Coordinating the hiring of faculty and staff
  • Interacting with community colleges and high schools  
Faculty Responsibilities
  • Teaching, engaging in scholarly activities, and performing service to the institution and profession
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics Education, or a directly related field (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited, or government-certified university)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service sufficient to merit the rank of associate professor or professor with tenure
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of successful administrative and leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a high level of faculty morale and enthusiasm
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
