Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for one teaching professor senate positions at the ranks of Acting Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment, Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment, Lecturer with Security of Employment, and Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment, with an expected start date of July 1, 2020. Candidates in all areas of pure and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. Lecturer with Security of Employment, and Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment are equivalent to tenure, and Acting Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment, Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment are regarded as equivalent to tenure-track.

The duties of the position include: 1. Teaching two large lower-division courses per semester, or an equivalent teaching load. 2. Carrying out Scholarly or Research activity, including scholarship relating to teaching. 3. Engaging in teaching related projects, which are decided upon in consultation with the department chair, such as curriculum development, organization of teaching between different instructors, development of infrastructure to support teaching, etc. 4. Other service, such as service on department and university committees, service to the profession, outreach efforts, etc.

Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent international degree), as well as teaching and research or scholarly activity in Mathematics beyond the doctoral degree at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications: Teaching Professor applicants are expected to have proven record of teaching at the undergraduate level, and research/scholarly experience in mathematics. Serious consideration will be given to the candidate’s record and potential for pedagogical innovation and effective leadership, including the ability to manage large classes staffed by teams of instructors with students of diverse backgrounds. Serious consideration will be given to professional service, including service promoting access to and diversity in higher education and the academic profession. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
