About us 
The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics, and is currently organised into six research groups, namely: Algebra and Number Theory, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis and Probability and Applications. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes. 

Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises of around 70 academic staff, 16 research assistants and fellows, and 13 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 70 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates. Recently, £18M was invested in the School’s building transformation project to provide state-of-the-art research, teaching and study facilities for staff and students. The School is on track to move back into its fully refurbished building during the summer of 2019.  

About the role
Applications are invited for the role of Postdoctoral Research Assistant to undertake research in the ‘Data-driven stochastic control’ project at the Alan Turing Institute under the supervision of Prof John Moriarty. The successful applicant may sit either at Queen Mary or at the Alan Turing Institute. 

The role involves the application of the theory of stochastic optimal control in data-driven settings, and the investigation of applications to artificial intelligence. This includes, but is not limited to, research in optimal stopping, optimal switching and backward stochastic differential and difference equations, model ambiguity and risk aversion. The appointee will need to have a PhD in mathematics (obtained or near to completion) or equivalent qualification/experience, and a promising track record in applied probability.

Pay & Benefits 
The post is full time, fixed term with an end date of 24 August 2021. The expected start date is 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be in the range of £31,613 - £44,807 depending on experience and is inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
