About us

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics, and is currently organised into six research groups, namely: Algebra and Number Theory, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis and Probability and Applications. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes.

Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises of around 70 academic staff, 16 research assistants and fellows, and 13 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 70 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates. Recently, £18M was invested in the School’s building transformation project to provide state-of-the-art research, teaching and study facilities for staff and students. The School moved back into its fully refurbished building during the summer of 2019.

About the role

Applications are invited for the role of Postdoctoral Research Assistant to undertake research in the ‘Topological Analysis of Maritime Data’ project under the supervision of Dr. Primoz Skraba. This is a project funded from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the Alan Turing Institute. The project will also include collaboration with Dr. Vidit Nanda at Oxford.

The role involves the application of topological data analysis techniques for anomaly detection. This involves various aspects of topological data analysis including but is not limited to persistent homology and the various tools to compute it, distances and statistics on persistence diagrams, and stratified spaces.

The appointee will need to have a PhD (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, or related (obtained or near to completion) or equivalent qualification.

Pay & Benefits

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months starting before March 2020. Starting salary will be in the range £34,220 – £36,098 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and USS pension scheme. The successful candidate will be expected to start the post as soon as possible.
