Scope of Job

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2020. All areas in the mathematical sciences will be considered, with a preference for Mathematics Education for one of the positions. The successful candidates will be expected to significantly contribute to the School’s research programs, to advance and support its teaching mission at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to promote diversity and inclusivity, to be committed to student success, and to participate in appropriate service activities.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS, at UTRGV is currently home to 46 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and 35 instructional faculty. The School currently offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, and Math Education. UTRGV has been recently granted Preliminary Authority by the University of Texas System to develop a Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications. Successful candidates for the position will be expected to support the development of this program. The school has a strong interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering.

UTRGV is a distributed campus, one university spanning four counties and multiple locations. Our purpose is to be a university for the entire Rio Grande Valley and beyond. Over 91% of the students enrolled at UTRGV identify as Hispanic, making UTRGV one of the top 3 universities in the United States with the highest percentage of Hispanic students. The campuses are located in the rapidly growing Rio Grande Valley region in the southern tip of Texas, which provides a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
