The department of Mathematics invites applications for up to two lecturer positions in mathematics beginning in Fall term 2020. Ideally, candidates should have a common research interest with some other member of the Department. Current research areas include applied mathematics, combinatorics, algebraic and differential geometry, logic, non-commutative geometry, number theory, operator algebras, probability, set theory and topology.

The department (math.dartmouth.edu) is home to 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. Part of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematics has a strong Ph.D. program and outstanding undergraduate majors. Members of the department have collaborative connections across the Arts and Sciences, with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business. Applied math faculty also regularly collaborate with scientists at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), an army lab located two miles from Dartmouth.

Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate student populations are diverse by many measures. We are especially interested in applicants with a record of successful teaching and mentoring of students from all backgrounds (including first-generation college students, low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ, etc.) and who have a demonstrated ability to contribute to Dartmouth’s undergraduate diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as the Women in Science Program, E. E. Just STEM Scholars Program, and Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (ASURE).

Lecturers teach four ten-week courses distributed over three of the four Dartmouth terms. Teaching opportunities span the full spectrum of undergraduate and graduate courses. The initial appointment is for 12 months, effective September 1, 2020. Lecturers will be reviewed in their first year and, given satisfactory teaching, the contract will be extended for an additional 12 months.

Eligibility requires completion of the Ph.D. before September 30, 2020. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a graduate school transcript, thesis abstract, statement of research plans and interests, statement of pedagogical experience and interests, and at least three, preferably four, letters of recommendation. At least one referee should address the applicant’s ability as a teacher and, if the applicant’s native language is not English, the applicant’s ability to use English in the classroom. At least two referees should write about the applicant’s research ability. The Department will give first consideration to applications completed by February 1, 2020 but will accept applications until available positions are filled.
