Lecturer Position Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing University of Waterloo

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) in the Office of the Dean of Math, Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invite applications for a definite-term appointment at the rank of Lecturer for a contract of two years less a day. A minimum of a Master’s degree in mathematics or a related discipline is required. Candidates are expected to have teaching experience. Experience in outreach or enrichment activities at the secondary school level would be an asset, as would experience in computer science education or enrichment. Experience working in education in a developing nation, a remote area, or an underprivileged community is essential. Experience working in education in Africa would be an asset.

The position will normally have a teaching load of four one-term courses per year. The position will make significant contributions to the CEMC’s strategic direction in Africa. In collaboration with partners in Africa, and together with the CEMC Director and others, the position will design and execute an ambitious and realistic plan to support mathematical outreach that can build on CEMC’s substantial experience and resources. The position will be jointly responsible for the CEMC’s initiatives in Africa and will include multiple trips each year to Africa to build relationships with and work with partner organizations, with teachers, and with elementary and secondary school students. Other responsibilities will include participation in the extensive array of CEMC activities. This includes contest preparation and administration, student and teacher workshops, and development of online resources. Successful candidates may be eligible for reappointment to additional terms.

The anticipated start date is 1 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $125,000.

The CEMC (http://cemc.uwaterloo.ca) is Canada's largest and most recognized outreach organization for promoting and creating activities and materials in mathematics and computer science. The CEMC is housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. It was founded in 1995 with origins dating back to the 1960s. The CEMC’s activities include 15 mathematics and computing contests with more than 265,000 registrations annually, an extensive school visiting program, a variety of on campus face-to-face workshops and conferences for students and teachers, a large suite of free online resources, and an online Master’s program aimed specifically at secondary school mathematics teachers.

The Faculty of Mathematics (https://uwaterloo.ca/math) is the largest concentration of mathematical and computer science talent in the world. With more than 8000 graduate and undergraduate students, 200 full-time professors, and 500 courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science, the Faculty is a powerhouse of discovery and innovation.
