The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff for the position of

1-3 Doctoral Students in Mathematics or Statistics beginning August 1st 2020 or as agreed, contract length maximum of four years. 

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis, geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications e.g. in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics the main research areas are spatial statistics, time series analysis, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, cost-efficient design, biometry and environmental statistics. 

The selected Doctoral Student will be assigned to the appropriate research group in the Department. The tasks of a Doctoral Student focus on research heading to a doctoral thesis in the University of Jyväskylä, on doctoral studies, and on assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks. 

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of doctoral student are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The selected person is required to have a command of English language. 

Doctoral Student must have a Master’s degree and accepted as a student or post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the faculty. 

The initial salary of a doctoral student is typically around 2200 € / month. 

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
