The Drake University Department of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks an outstanding teacher for a nine-month full-time tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor of Mathematics beginning August 2021. A PhD (completion by August 2021) in mathematics or a related field is required. Research specialties among our faculty include applied mathematics, the history of mathematics, the theory of computation, and mathematics education. All specialties are welcome, but we are particularly interested in a candidate who can strengthen our expertise in fields related to abstract algebra or applied mathematics. In addition, an interest in research issues related to mathematics education would be a plus.
Applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. The course load is six 3-credit-hour courses per year. A successful candidate will be expected to have an active research program, teach a variety of mathematics classes, to eventually guide undergraduates in research projects and independent studies, and to teach an occasional First Year Seminar.
Drake University is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EEO) dedicated to building a culturally diverse and pluralistic community committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment and strongly encourages applications from all qualified applicants. Candidates must demonstrate ability to provide support to and work with individuals and groups from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, disability and/or ethnic backgrounds. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, it is especially important the candidate be attuned to issues involving students from under-represented backgrounds.
Drake University is a private institution and consistently ranked by US News and World Report as among the top three Midwest Regional Universities. Drake is located in the heart of Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa, which has a vibrant metro area of well-over 500,000 residents with ample downtown housing. Des Moines was recently named the “Best City for Young Professionals” by Forbes Magazine and has also been recognized by Parenting Magazine on its "Best Cities for Families" list. Drake has also been acknowledged by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a “Great College to Work For.” More information on Des Moines, Drake’s work environment, employee benefits, and faculty development opportunities is available at Drake University Human Resource.

Applicants should submit electronically (either separately or in a single document): a letter of application, curriculum vitae, description of teaching experience, teaching philosophy, research agenda (including a discussion of their ability to engage students in undergraduate research), commitment to empowering students of all backgrounds, and contact information for three references, at least two of whom can address teaching, through Drake's online application system, Hire Touch (search for Mathematics). Questions may be directed to Daniel Alexander, the search chair, via email at daniel.alexander@drake.edu
Review of applicants will begin January, 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. The original deadline of December 5, 2020 was extended due to schedule and work disruptions caused by the pandemic.

Drake University is an equal-opportunity employer and actively seeks applicants who reflect the diversity of the nation.  No applicant shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, religion, age, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, genetic information, or veteran status.
