The Simons Collaboration on Global Categorical Symmetries is a joint physics and mathematics research program focused on the interplay between quantum field theory, topology, higher category theory and representation theory. We are inviting applications for postdoctoral fellowships to begin in the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Opportunity:

Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree prior to the start of the appointment, and must demonstrate excellent research potential in areas germane to the Collaboration themes.

Postdoctoral members of the collaboration will have a primary supervisor based in one location, but will have the opportunity to make extended visits to other collaboration sites, to contribute to numerous joint research activities, and to participate in collaboration workshops and summer schools. In US mathematics departments, we plan to offer terms similar to those of the NSF MSPRF: either two years without any teaching obligation, or three years with a requirement to do some teaching, to be agreed between supervisor and candidate at the time an offer is made (and subject to approval by the host institution). However, the collaboration has no relationship with the NSF.

The collaboration sites and the corresponding Principal Investigators in Mathematics are:

Harvard University (Mike Hopkins) Indiana University (Julia Plavnik) Perimeter Institute & Dalhousie University (Theo Johnson-Freyd) University of California Berkeley (Constantin Teleman, Nicolai Reshetikhin) University of Edinburgh (David Jordan) University of Texas Austin (Dan Freed) University of Munich (Claudia Scheimbauer) Zurich University (Alberto Cattaneo)

For The Physics positions, see https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/20090

An application should be submitted to each desired host institution, at the respective linked website. This will include a CV, a list of publications, a summary of research interests, and three letters of recommendation. Finalists for the position may have their files reviewed jointly by the Collaboration PI’s. To ensure full consideration, applicants are also asked to record basic information on the webform to be found at https://scgcs.berkeley.edu/open-positions/

For full consideration, applications should be received by December 5, 2021.

Please apply online for the post using the link at the bottom of this page In addition (for maths) please arrange to have 2 reference letters sent to references@maths.ed.ac.uk before the closing date. (Please do not send your application to this email address, this is for references only)

All institutions involved are equal opportunity employers and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

About Us

As a world-leading research-intensive University, we are here to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.

About the Team

The School of Mathematics is one of the world’s leading mathematical sciences departments, home to internationally excellent researchers and to an innovative educational environment for both undergraduates and postgraduates. Our location in the beautiful and historic capital of Scotland puts us in the centre of a vibrant community of academics, cultural institutions, industry partners and research institutes.

As a School we value both the breadth and depth of our mathematical research. We have over seventy permanent members of academic staff and over twenty research fellows and research associates, who come from across the world and together cover a broad range of research topics in pure and applied mathematics, operational research and statistics. Our Graduate School has over eighty research students and over one hundred MSc students, and our postgraduate provision has gone from strength to strength with the recent introduction of Doctoral Training Centres in Analysis and its Applications, and in Data Science. We have close links with the School of Informatics and are actively involved in current data science developments, particularly as one of the 5 UK-wide partners in the Alan Turing Institute.

The School is passionate about delivering a world-leading educational environment for its students and is constantly exploring new ideas in mathematical education in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. Quantitative skills have never been more in demand in the world, and our students graduate with strong skills in critical thinking, independent learning and communication. Within 6 months of graduating, 93% of our students are in full-time employment or study. In 2010 the Teaching Programme review "welcomed the excellent quality of education" provided by the School.

The School of Mathematics holds a Bronze Athena SWAN award in recognition of our commitment to advancing the representation of women in mathematics.

Further information about the School, our research and our teaching is available at http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk
