Announcement of Position to Begin Fall 2012

FACULTY POSITION: Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics. We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate teaching with a strong interest in secondary mathematics education.

DUTIES: The main duty will be to teach an average of 12 credit hours of course work each semester in (primarily) mathematics as well as in mathematics education. A successful applicant will be expected to take a leadership role in the development of the Mathematics Education concentration of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program. Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified to supervise student teachers. Involvement in curriculum development, research and scholarly activity, academic advisement, and service are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair. The use of laptops and web-based technology as appropriate to enhance student learning is also expected.

1. One of the following by August 2012:
    A. An earned PhD in Mathematics Education with at least 15 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics.
    B. An earned PhD in Mathematics with at least 15 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics education.
2. Demonstrated interest in K-12 mathematics education research.
3. Evidence of teaching potential and strong interest in undergraduate teaching.

4. At least 30 semester credits of graduate coursework in mathematics.
5. Three years of mathematics teaching experience in grades 6 – 12.
6. Certifiable in mathematics teaching by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (

DEPARTMENT: The Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science Department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. It has 25 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department offers all the core courses necessary for the University's program in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science program which enrolls approximately 150 students. It also provides service courses for the various programs within the University. The department is currently developing a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Department members have been active in incorporating technology into their courses. Technologies currently in use include laptops, graphing calculators, course web sites, symbolic mathematics software (e.g., Maple), interactive distance education, and web-enhanced instruction (e.g., Desire2Learn, Course Compass, and WeBWorK). The department has a growing interest in involving undergraduate students in research.
