The Department of Sciences and Mathematics of the California State University Maritime Academy invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education beginning August 2017. We are looking for an expert in mathematics education to take a leadership role in developing programs which address the needs of students who are under-prepared for university math coursework. She/he would help create, redesign, or revitalize courses to optimize teaching and learning for our under-prepared and struggling students. He/she will also be expected to work with our existing tutoring center to help improve or expand the instruction given there.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime): Locatedon a compact but scenic waterfront campusin Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campusCalifornia State University (CSU)system. Serving a population of approximately 1100 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast. Cal Maritime offers six baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs (GSMA), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Marine Transportation. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS: Our department is a collegial group of 15 faculty members – 4 tenured, 6 tenure-track, and 5 adjuncts. We offer lower division, foundational science and math courses for students majoring in baccalaureate degrees noted above. We also offer a Mathematics minor as well as a minor in Marine Science.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Include but not limited to):
• Full-time (12 units/semester) teaching of a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses. During the first two years of teaching, the teaching load is reduced to 9 units/semester.
• Lead a program of course design/redesign to address the needs of under-prepared students.
• Maintain an effective program of scholarship.
• Provide service to the campus community outside of the classroom.

• Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or Mathematics or an official notification of completion of the doctoral degree before August 2017
• An ability to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses
• An ongoing program of scholarship and a willingness to serve the campus-at-large through committee work is also required

• Demonstrated expertise or experience in serving under-prepared students
• A genuine passion for teaching, scholarship and service
• Knowledge of innovative and effective classroom teaching methods

SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications and experience of the individual.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
