Position Description:    

High Point University invites applications for one tenure-track Actuarial Science and Statistics faculty position at the rank of assistant professor beginning January 2021. The department has a healthy Actuarial Science and Statistics program, and a new Data Analytics and Statistics program. This position is available in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

-Teach undergraduate courses in statistics, actuarial science, or mathematics for both majors and non-majors, as assigned. The teaching load is usually three courses per semester with two preparations. However, due to COVID-19, the teaching load is four courses with three preparations.

-Participate in research, other scholarly activities, and professional development.

-Other responsibilities include service to the Department (e.g., student advising), the University, the community, and the profession.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:

-PhD in statistics, actuarial science, applied mathematics, mathematics, or a closely related field by Spring 2021. Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries will be considered.

-The successful applicant will (i) present evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, (ii) demonstrate an ability to teach statistics or mathematics courses, both for majors and non-majors, and (iii) present evidence of being able to contribute to the Actuarial Science and Statistics programs.

-The successful applicant will also present evidence of the potential to establish a scholarship program that can contribute to the professional development of Actuarial Science students, or which can engage students in the high impact practice of undergraduate research.

-The successful applicant will also present evidence of the potential to establish partnerships with companies for internship opportunities for Actuarial Science students.

Preferred qualifications:

-Experience teaching with R and/or SAS.

-The Department is especially interested in applicants who bring diverse perspectives to the University, and in those who may be especially effective in mentoring students who are members of groups that have been historically under-represented in the discipline.
