The Albert Nerken School of Engineering at The Cooper Union invites applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics at the assistant professor level. The appointment will be with the Department of Mathematics and will commence in Fall 2021. Qualified candidates from all areas of pure and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. The Department encourages applications from early-career mathematicians with an engaging research program that can foster student interest in the discipline and related fields. The successful candidate will be fully involved in the spectrum of departmental course offerings for the engineering disciplines, the minor in mathematics, and advanced independent study and research electives. The Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, who believed that an education “equal to the best technological schools” should be accessible to those who qualify, independent of race, religion, sex, wealth or social status, and should be “open and free to all who felt a want of scientific knowledge.” Today, the institution focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering, art, and architecture. The engineering school is its largest division, with a continuous full-time enrollment of approximately 500 students majoring in chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. The degree programs provide a rigorous analytical curriculum that fosters inclusiveness and collaboration, and each enrolled student receives at least a half-tuition scholarship.

The successful candidate for this position will have obtained a Ph.D. in pure or applied mathematics prior to the beginning of the appointment. Applications should include:

(1) A cover letter that specifically addresses how the applicant’s teaching, research, and service interests will both enhance and complement the existing strengths of the Department of Mathematics at Cooper Union; (2) A curriculum vitae; (3) A statement of teaching philosophy; (4) A statement of research interests; (5) A statement about diversity and inclusion; (6) Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses the candidate’s teaching methods and evidence pertaining to pedagogical outcomes.

Complete applications should be submitted to Human Resources, 30 Cooper Square, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10003, or via email to hr@cooper.edu. Nominations and questions about this position may be sent directly to Professors Stanislav Mintchev and Mili Shah, co-chairs of the Search Committee, via email at stanislav.mintchev@cooper.edu and mili.shah@cooper.edu. Applications received by January 4, 2021 will be assured full consideration. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

This is a unionized position.
