A Research Fellow is required to work with Dr Tyler Kelly in the School of Mathematics. The position is funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship "Open Mirror Geometry for Landau-Ginzburg Models."

The successful candidate will join the new Birmingham Geometry and Mathematical Physics Group. The profile and research interests of this group may be found at:

You will work in collaboration with Dr Tyler Kelly as well as manage your own research projects. You will conduct academic research and administrative activities, collaborate with other members of the group or more broadly, and help foster a positive research culture. There may be some teaching opportunities for the research associate once in post, but teaching will not be a primary focus in this position.

The research context

This research project focusses on mirror symmetry and understanding mirror symmetry for Landau-Ginzburg models. This is an intradisciplinary mathematical discipline and research program, so applications from a wide array of geometry is encouraged. In particular, we seek applications from researchers studying aspects of mathematics including, but not limited to: derived categories, (open and closed) enumerative geometries, integrable systems/hierarchies, Hodge theory, mirror symmetry, symplectic geometry, algebraic geometry, and noncommutative algebra/geometry.

Main Duties/Responsibilities include:

• To conduct original research within the research project. • To interact with the members of the Geometry and Mathematical Physics group, including PhD students, through active participation in reading seminars and joint research activities. • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters. • There may be opportunities to develop ones own research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required

Person Specification

• High level analytical capability. • Applicants will be expected to hold or be close to obtaining a PhD or equivalent qualification(s) in one of the following subjects: Algebraic Geometry, Symplectic Geometry, Mirror Symmetry, Mathematical Physics, Noncommutative Geometry, Integrable Systems, or a related area of mathematics. • Ability to communicate complex information clearly. • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones. • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively. • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and how to ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
