Position Description:

The Complexity Science Hub Vienna is a young research institution dedicated to a deeper quantitative and predictive understanding of complex systems for the betterment of society. We provide an exciting, creative, bureaucracy-free environment for open-minded visionaries who want to make a change and are brave enough to step out of mainstream science.

We seek an excellent creative and highly motivated researcher with a PhD in computational/analytic social science, statistical physics, data science, computer science or other related fields. The candidate must have a high interest in multidisciplinary research, a genuine curiosity about the dynamics of human societies, and a critical, open-minded, and collaborative spirit. Specific goals of this position include building data-informed models for understanding the emer-gence of inequalities and biases in online and offline social systems. The candidate will be working in a newly established research group led by Fariba Karimi.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will play a leading role within an already funded project, designing, managing, executing, and publishing research in collaboration with other researchers at the CSH and elsewhere. The position is tied to the CSH Research Group on Computational Social Science and you will work in collaboration with network scientists, physicists, computer scientists, and social scientists to analyze and model the formation and evolution of biases and inequalities in society and the role of algorithms in reinforcing them.

YOUR PROFILE

You already hold a PhD degree and are proficient in the English language, both written and spoken. We expect you to have the proven ability to carry out research independently, as exemplified by past work that showcases your strong analytical and modeling skills. Good knowledge and experience in computational modeling, statistical analysis, and data science is required. Experience in programming languages for data retrieval, network analysis, and statistics (e.g., Python) is necessary. Experience in running online experiments will be considered a plus.

WE OFFER - A varied position in a dynamic, internationally oriented, appreciative and open working environment - A fully funded postdoctoral position for an initial period of three years - A salary and benefits according to Austrian standards - A highly international and interdisciplinary research environment that attracts outstanding PhD students and postdocs

APPLICATION

Your application includes a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a brief research statement (why you think you are an excellent candidate and what research you would like to do with us), and any additional material that helps us to understand that you are research-oriented, technically skilled, and creative. Please also include the names and full contact addresses of at least two individuals who are willing to write a letter of recommendation for you if we request it. Candidates should send their application material to office@csh.ac.at with the subject line: “Postdoc Computational Social Science”

First application deadline: December 10, 2020. Further applications will be screened until the position is filled.
