Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Department of Mathematics at Bowdoin College invites applications for two tenure track positions at the rank of assistant professor beginning July 1, 2021. We look to welcoming two individuals who share our commitment to the goal of fostering an inclusive mathematical community through exemplary research, teaching, mentoring, and outreach.

Successful applicants will have an established research trajectory, evidence of excellence in teaching and support for inclusion and diversity inside or outside the classroom. In each of these areas, we appreciate that a candidate's experiences may be commensurate with their career stage. Applications are invited in all fields of mathematics and statistics.

The regular teaching load is two courses per semester, generally one major-level and one introductory-level course. The Department of Mathematics welcomes applications from candidates committed to the instruction and support of a diverse student population. We value a community in which students of all backgrounds are warmly received and encouraged to succeed.

Bowdoin College offers strong support for faculty research including a fully-funded, year-long junior sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), regular post-tenure sabbaticals, as well as conference and travel support.  Bowdoin also provides robust assistance in securing funding from outside agencies.  We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve consideration of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of spouses and partners of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions through MathJobs.org. A complete application includes a cover letter; curriculum vitae; research, teaching, and diversity statements; and letters of reference. We request that each applicant submit three letters of reference: two addressing research and one addressing teaching. If your efforts related to diversity, equity and inclusion, whether inside or outside the classroom, will not be fully described in your research or teaching letters, we welcome a fourth letter from a reference who can speak to your commitment to fostering an inclusive mathematical community.

In your cover letter, please address in one or two paragraphs your short- or long-term career goals related to research; teaching; and diversity, equity, and inclusion, and why Bowdoin College is a good place for you to realize them. A Ph.D. is expected by the time of appointment. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled.

The Bowdoin College Department of Mathematics is a welcoming community of dedicated scholars and students brought together by our shared joy in the exploration of mathematics.  A true liberal arts department, our research and teaching range across the discipline, from number theory to statistics, with outside connections to biology, computer science, political science, economics, and physics.  We prioritize mentorship for all our faculty and are excited to welcome new members who share our commitment to research, teaching, and building a community that actively broadens who counts themselves as a mathematician.

Our talented students form the core of our community. With roughly fifty majors each year, ours is among the largest majors on campus, while still retaining an intimate and engaging culture that attempts to cultivate the spark of learning in each of its members. In addition to engaging classroom dynamics, we benefit from weekly student-faculty lunches, faculty-supported study sessions, and a variety of seminar series focusing on faculty research, teaching practice, and topics of interest to students.
