University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Mathematics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in biological soft matter and complex fluids, to work with Prof. Saverio Spagnolie in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a project funded by the National Science Foundation.

The project aims to explore the shapes and dynamics of soft biological materials in complex fluids, in particular fluids with orientational (liquid crystalline) order. Orientational order can render the fluid strongly elastic, and may result in highly anisotropic viscous stresses. When soft bodies are placed in such an environment, deformations can reduce the elastic energy in the bulk, leading to intricate particle shapes, which in turn can lead to insights about biological structure and function and spur the development of new applications. Both analytical and numerical techniques are needed to explore such systems, while directions are constantly evolving through collaborations with experimentalists. Depending on the interests of the candidate, the project could develop a more specific focus in any of these areas.

The position will commence on August 23, 2021 contingent upon budgetary approval, and is funded for 2 years with a possibility of extension. The position involves a reduced teaching responsibility. Promise of excellence in research and teaching is important.
