Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San Jose State University invites applications for one full time tenure-track faculty position in Statistics/Data Science in the rank of Assistant Professor. Our department is home to about 500 undergraduates and graduate students, 30 tenure ladder faculty and 20 part-time instructors. The department has faculty expertise in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Mathematics Education. In addition to the traditional BA and MA Math degrees, we also have BS and MS programs in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and a joint MS Data Science program with the Department of Computer Science. Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Doctoral degree in Statistics or a closely related field by July 2021. We are especially interested in applicants with focus on development of statistical and/or machine learning methods and computational tools for statistical learning and inference on large scale or complex data sets. Candidates should have expertise in at least one relational data base management system (SQL, Hadoop, MapReduce, Pig, Hive).

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience. Responsibilities

Candidate is expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate mathematics and statistics courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, to maintain a program of scholarly activity, to work on curriculum and program development. Candidate is expected to supervise graduate students on their master’s theses and consulting projects in both the department’s MS Statistics program and the College of Science’s MS Data Science program. Candidate would also be expected to supervise student teams working on industrial research projects in the department’s Center for Applied Math, Computation, and Statistics (CAMCOS) program. Candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments.
