Job Title: Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Background: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22.

As part of a University-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to diversify the faculty, the department seeks applicants with expertise in pure mathematics. As an urban-based department dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from scholars committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the successful pursuit of external grants. The successful candidate will be joining a department with more than 35 full-time faculty members, over 380 majors and minors across 7 undergraduate programs in mathematics, statistics and data science, and 2 master’s programs. For more information about the department, please visit its website at https://www.luc.edu/math/.

Duties and Responsibilities: The position requires teaching a range of courses, including advanced courses supporting the mathematics majors and service courses for the sciences; developing and maintaining a quality research program; and service at the department, the university, and the scientific community level. A successful candidate is expected to commit to mentoring of and advocacy for students from under-represented groups, supporting the involvement of students in research, and the pursuit of external research funding.

Minimum Qualifications: The candidate will have a Ph.D. in an area of mathematics at the time of appointment. Candidates for the position must have demonstrated potential for developing and maintaining a research program and competing for external grant funding in an area of pure mathematics that aligns with those in the department, broadly defined. Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education, including interest in inclusive teaching practices and mentoring students from under-represented populations. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Special Instructions to Applicants: Candidates should submit to https://www.careers.luc.edu/postings/14564 (1) a brief letter of interest; (2) a current Curriculum Vitae; (3) a statement outlining the applicant’s research agenda (4) a statement on teaching experience; and (5) a statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to mentoring a diverse student body through research, teaching and other channels and engaging a diverse community through scholarship and service. Applicants should also arrange for three recommendations from individuals prepared to speak to their professional qualifications for this position, especially in terms of scholarship, teaching and mentorship, to be submitted electronically to the mathjobs website listed below.

Additionally, applicants should submit all application materials, including letters of recommendation, to http://www.mathjobs.org. At least one of the letters should address teaching qualifications.

Candidates may forward additional materials related to teaching excellence and samples of scholarly publications to:

Aaron Lauve, Ph.D., Search Committee Chair alauve@luc.edu

Review of applications will begin on December 14th, 2020 and continue until the position is filled. LUC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty. The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity – including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment – is critical to achieving the University’s mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and services in an increasingly diverse society. Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual’s record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, we seek candidates who will contribute to our strategic plan to deliver a transformative education in the Jesuit tradition. To learn more about LUC’s mission, candidates should consult our website at www.luc.edu/mission. For information about the university’s focus on transformative education, they should consult our website at www.luc.edu/transformativeed.
