We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences beginning in the 2021-2022 academic year.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for one tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in the areas of Statistics/Computational Mathematics. Preferred research areas include applications of statistics and computational mathematics in machine learning, deep learning, data science, medical and public health, environmental sciences, economics, and actuarial sciences. Number of years to tenure may be negotiated depending on the candidate’s demonstrated capacity for independent research and potential to earn grant funding.

SMSS faculty have active research programs in statistics, pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education with over 40 tenure-track and tenured faculty. The school offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in statistics and mathematics and is developing a new Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications, now at the final stages of approval. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university that include the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, College of Health Professions, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. SMSS faculty closely collaborate with researchers from the South Texas Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (Edinburg), Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg), and the University of Texas School of Public Health (Brownsville).

This appointment involves teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and requires mentoring and supervision of undergraduate research, graduate research, and master’s thesis. A commitment to excellence in both research and teaching as well as providing service to the community and profession are essential. The new Assistant Professor should contribute significantly to community engagement efforts across the unit and the newly established BS in Statistics and MS in Applied Statistics and Data Science.

We seek to increase the representation of historically underrepresented faculty in the sciences, including underrepresented minority and women faculty. We value applicants who can understand and have overcome race, gender-based, and ability-based barriers, and who can bring with them the wealth of worldview, perspective, and experience that is critical to an innovative and accessible educational environment. As a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution, UTRGV is committed to preparing its students to succeed, contribute and excel in an increasingly diverse, global, and interconnected world, and seeks faculty who are prepared to help in this goal.
