Job Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (www.math.umass.edu) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for Visiting Assistant Professor positions (non-tenure track).  One or more appointments may be a Marshall H. Stone Visiting Assistant Professorship, with a higher salary and an enhanced research fund.  Candidates should have completed the Ph.D. by the beginning of the appointment. The initial appointment is for one year and is ordinarily renewable for two additional years. Exceptional promise in research and a commitment to outstanding teaching at all levels of the curriculum are expected.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Teaching responsibility of two courses per semester; Marshall H. Stone visiting assistant professorships have reduced teaching loads.
  • Maintain an active research program and contribute to the research life of the department by attending/organizing/giving talks in local seminars, informal mathematical discussions and/or collaborations with faculty, other visiting assistant professors, or graduate students.
  • Contribute to mathematical research in the broader mathematical community by attending research seminars and conferences, publishing research, and presenting research at seminars and conferences.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A PhD in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Exceptional promise in research.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate math and/or statistics courses and the ability to work with diverse populations of students.
  • A commitment to outstanding teaching at all levels of the curriculum.
  • The potential to interact effectively with department faculty members.
