The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a high international profile with around 70 permanent academic staff from all areas of mathematics, over 100 PhD students and a large number of visitors and post-docs. Our Department emphasises the unity of Mathematics and there are strong interactions between research groups.

Various research centres such as the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data, the Centre for Networks and Collective Behaviour, and the Centre for Nonlinear Mechanics, provide focus in interdisciplinary collaborations. Doctoral studies are supported by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa), which has currently over 70 PhD students. In addition, the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) promotes and supports cross-campus research activities, industrial, and international collaborations, in all areas of mathematical sciences.
