The Department of Applied Mathematics at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan, invites applications for a postdoc position. The position begins from either July 1, 2021 or earlier. The position is open for the research areas of mathematical foundation of data science, or differential geometry.

Candidates for professorships should have strong commitment to research. The environment and system of NSYSU are international, so knowing Mandarin is not mandatory. The targeting research project of this position is international, collaborative and interdisciplinary. It involves Professor Chih-Wei Chen (NSYSU), physicians from various medical centers in Taiwan and Professor Hau-Tieng Wu from Duke University. This long-term project is aiming to foster new generation applied mathematicians that bridge mathematics and medicine.

The annual salary is 30k USD without teaching obligation, which does not include various other supports. The living expense in Taiwan is low, while the living quality is very high. The national basic education in Taiwan is 12 years education, and the tuition of public education is very affordable. The system produces creative students with high performance in the world, especially in mathematics and science. For candidates who cannot speak Mandarin, it is not a problem to live in Taiwan with English—almost everyone speaks English, and the majority of the population in Taiwan, particularly the young generation, can speak fluent English. According to the global ranking (https://www.ef.edu/epi/), the English fluence index of Taiwan is ranked 38 out of 100 counties under evaluation. According to OSAC 2016 safety report Overall Crime and Safety Situation was classifies as low criminality. According to Economist Intelligence Unit, Taiwan was ranked 5th in Asia in the global democracy index in 2019, and ranked 31st in the global rankings of 167 countries and territories, moving up one slot since 2018.
