The University of Houston-Downtown invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Data Science or Statistics (or closely related fields) commencing in Fall 2021. The two positions will be at the Assistant Professor level and will be housed in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The department (hosted by the College of Sciences and Technology) offers undergraduate degrees in Data Science, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and a master’s degree in Data Analytics. Applicants must be committed to teaching excellence in a diverse student environment and engaging students in high-impact activities. For the first position, a PhD in Data Science/Statistics/Biostatistics/Optimization/Machine Learning or related field is required. For the second position, a PhD in Applied Mathematics/Computational Science (with Data Science emphasis) is preferred but other related fields will be considered. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop independent research or pursue other scholarly interests. Experience credits may be awarded to qualified candidates. Depending on qualifications, more experienced applicants may be considered for Associate Professor positions.

The hires are expected to:

Teach Data Science and Statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in different formats including face-to-face, hybrid, online, and problem/project-based Mentor undergraduate and graduate student projects Teach R, Python, Julia, SQL, and other programming languages Lead in curriculum development Serve the university, profession, and community Collaborate with other members of the university and its affiliates Engage in scholarly activities EEO/AA Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D degree in Data Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Operations Research, Optimization, Machine Learning or related field for the first position Ph.D degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (with Data Science emphasis) or related field for the second position Proven experience with one or more of the following languages: R, Python, Julia, C++ Excellent oral and written communication skills Evidence of research potential

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching experience Experience in mentoring students Experience in working with first-generation college and non-traditional students For full consideration, a curriculum vitae, letter of interest (one page), statements of teaching and research interests (at most three pages each), graduate transcripts, and three letters of reference should be submitted at www.uhd.edu/careers.

In the teaching statement, please include relevant experience, philosophy, modern pedagogies used or explored, and a description of your past work or plans to equitably engage diverse students and develop inclusive classrooms and student communities.

In the research statement, please detail relevant experiences and plans (publications, funding potential) on how to engage a diverse student population in your scholarly activities.
