Lecturer Positions

Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing University of Waterloo

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for two three-year definite-term appointments at the rank of Lecturer. A minimum of a Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline is required. Candidates are expected to have teaching experience at the post-secondary or secondary level.

Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

• Experience in education, outreach or enrichment activities at the secondary school level.

• Experience in computer science education and enrichment.

• Experience teaching at the elementary school level and/or developing resources for elementary school teachers and students.

• Experience with the Indigenization of mathematics education and/or computing education.

• Experience working with Black, Indigenous or other equity-seeking groups of students in a mathematics and/or computing context.

• Experience teaching and/or researching the pedagogy of mathematics.

• Experience teaching mathematics and/or computer science in French and/or Spanish.

• Experience developing material for and relationships with secondary school teachers.

• A demonstrated track record of teaching excellence at the post-secondary level.

The successful candidates will normally have a teaching load of four one-term courses per year in either or both of mathematics and computer science. Other responsibilities will include participation in the extensive array of CEMC activities. These include student and teacher workshops, development of online resources, and contest preparation and administration. Successful candidates may be eligible for reappointment to additional terms, and those demonstrating outstanding performance in teaching and service may be eventually considered for an ongoing appointment as Continuing Lecturer.

The anticipated start date is 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $130,000.

The CEMC (http://cemc.uwaterloo.ca) is Canada's largest and most recognized outreach organization for promoting and creating activities and materials in mathematics and computer science. The CEMC is housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. It was founded in 1995 with origins dating back to the 1960s. The CEMC’s activities include 15 mathematics and computing contests with more than 265,000 registrations annually, an extensive school visiting program, a variety of face-to-face and virtual workshops and conferences for students and teachers, a large suite of free online resources, and an online Master’s program aimed specifically at secondary school mathematics teachers.

The Faculty of Mathematics (https://uwaterloo.ca/math) is the largest concentration of mathematical and computer science talent in the world. With more than 8000 graduate and undergraduate students, 200 full-time professors, and 500 courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science, the Faculty is a powerhouse of discovery and innovation.
