About the role

We invite applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the EPSRC funded project “Topology of automated motion planning” which is led by Professor Michael Farber. The research will be conducted in coordination with a research team from the University of Chicago led by Professor Shmuel Weinberger. This research shall use topological tools (and in particular methods of cohomology theory) to analyse algorithms of making decisions in situations when the outcome is a choice made from a continuum of possibilities rather than from a discrete set of values.

The successful applicant will possess a PhD in Mathematics (awarded or close to completion) or a closely related discipline and preferably have experience of research projects using mathematical tools in applied mathematics and other sciences. Research experience in Algebraic Topology is also essential for the role.

About us

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and is currently organised into seven research groups, namely: Algebra and Number Theory, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis, Probability and Applications, and Statistics and Data Science. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes.

Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises of around 70 academic staff, 15 research assistants and fellows, and 12 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 70 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates. Recently, £18M was invested in the School’s building transformation project to provide state-of-the-art research, teaching and study facilities for staff and students. The School moved back into its fully refurbished building during the summer of 2019.
