Inmas is a new program funded by the NSF, with twin hubs at the University of Illinois and Johns Hopkins University.  The Internship Network in the Mathematical Sciences (Inmas) will aid industry, government and non-profit partners in solving strategic challenges by leveraging the world-class mathematical sciences talent in universities in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. Developing and deepening these collaborations through graduate internships, Inmas will help business and community partners to succeed while transforming graduate students’ career readiness and strengthening the nation’s innovation ecosystem. The Visiting Internship Project Developer, under the guidance of the Inmas PIs, will identify and develop R&D internship projects at companies and government hosts in Illinois and neighboring states where the mathematical sciences can make a positive impact. The crucial skills for this position are curiosity about the world and a willingness to learn, as this position involves creative scientific thinking and involvement in a variety of different projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Networking/Relationship Building

  • Work with stakeholders and graduate students at the node institutions, in Illinois and nearby states, to learn the capabilities of researchers and graduate students in the mathematical sciences.
  • Work with the PI of the Inmas grant to create, maintain and cultivate a network of partners/clients in industry, government and academia that will benefit the academic learning and development of graduate students at node institutions.
  • Matching faculty supervisors and graduate students at the university nodes with appropriate host personnel based on academic background and internship host needs.

 Internship Development

  • Develop internship opportunities for mathematical sciences students at industry and government host organizations.
  • Assist in negotiating the agreements necessary to facilitate collaborations between internship hosts and Inmas, the nodes, and interns. Assist in matching students at the nodes to the internship projects.
  • Serve as Inmas point of contact for interns.
  • Oversee the interns’ reporting requirements, and ensure public visibility of the internship projects.

 Project Management

  • Coordinate with the external assessment consultant.
  • Assist with report writing and publicizing Inmas activities.
  • Suggest improvements to the program, and opportunities for expansion that benefit the graduate students and internship hosts.
  • Contribute to the success of the Inmas project by providing help and support to the PI and colleagues as needed, and as priorities and demands change within the organization.
  • Participate in Inmas student training events, and conduct or assist in running them if qualified to do so. Provide career development support to the node universities as needed.

 Regular travel is expected. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

 
Qualifications:

Required: Master’s degree or ABD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.  Experience coordinating complex projects or assisting students in solving problems.

Preferred:  PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics.  Internship or work experience in industry or a scientific lab.

 

Successful candidates will also possess broad basic knowledge of the mathematical sciences. Ability to assume responsibility and to work independently with minimum guidance. Sound, independent judgment. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Good listening skills. Diplomatic and highly ethical. Commitment to diversity and inclusion of women and underrepresented minorities. Excellent teamwork skills. Ability to balance competing priorities, while bringing multiple tasks to completion on deadline. Preferred: Excellent presentation skills. Broad basic knowledge in modern science and technology. Capacity to learn new technology skills. Ability to think creatively and try new things. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high performance culture. An active social/professional network with proven ability to promote participation and sponsorship in programs or initiatives in their community.


Regular travel is expected. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Valid drivers's license required.

The Visiting Internship Project Developer position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, visiting academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis, and renewable yearly based on satisfactory performance reviews and funding. The expected start date is flexible, in the period March-May 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
