MTRI is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional to help support multiple projects for our government and commercial customers. The Research Engineer/Scientist I – Distributed Computing Specialist will work with senior engineers and scientists to research, develop, and evaluate algorithms to be deployed in distributed environments. The successful candidate will have a solid background in deploying algorithms in cloud infrastructure, high performance computing solutions, and software design best practices. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs.
  • Lead distributed algorithm development and deployment in both local computing clusters and cloud-based environments.
  • Coordinate with IT staff to determine infrastructure needs to support distributed and high performance computing efforts, including conducting hardware optimization studies.
  • Contribute to developing new research thrusts in the areas of distributed and high performance computing.
  • Contribute technical expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports.
  • Prepare and deliver reports or presentations of research projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the generation of proposals and external funding. 
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a similar related field, and 1 year related experience either as part of degree program or post-degree

OR

Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a similar related field, and 3 years related experience as part of degree program or post-degree

OR

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a similar related field, and 6 years experience post-degree.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Experience in high performance computing, distributed environments, and cloud computing.
  • Experience in translating scientific theory into algorithms.
  • Experience prototyping mathematical algorithms.
  • Experience in software development.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, Julia, or equivalent language.
  • Experience evaluating the performance of algorithms on simulated and/or measured data.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Experience with programming GPUs.
  • Experience with radar signal processing.
  • Experience with AWS or equivalent commercial cloud environments.
  • Experience with hardware optimization.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas at meetings and symposia.
  • Ability to contribute to competitive grant proposals.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
