Position Description:    

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rutgers University--Newark, within a research project on theoretical foundations for machine and human learning. We specifically seek an individual with strong mathematical training and interests in Optimal transport. Interest or expertise in adjacent areas of geometry and/or probability would also be favored. The project is directed in Dr. Patrick Shafto and the individual would join the Cognitive and Data Sciences lab, a robust interdisciplinary research environment comprised of mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and behavioral scientists.

The position is intended to complement our ongoing research developing foundational theory for cooperation between humans and machines. This individual would complement and extend the expertise of a core group of pure mathematicians, as well as researchers studying explainable AI and robust machine learning.

The start date is flexible, but we would prefer an individual who would be available start in summer of 2021. The position would be for one year, with the possibility of renewal pending availability of funds.

Candidates should have a strong background in pure mathematics and interest in machine learning.
