The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in optimization of high-dimensional systems with applications to prehospital care. The fellowship is for two years full time with starting date October 15, 2021, or by agreement.

Stochastic optimization plays a key role in data-driven decision making, where problems are often high-dimensional and of black-box nature. The focus of this project is to develop new theory and algorithms for the area, with a potential emphasis on a new family of stochastic derivative-free algorithms that search for low-dimensional structures in a black-box problem. As an application, the applicant will interact with a multidisciplinary research team focused on optimizing the prehospital care in Sweden. A digital twin of the problem has already been developed which, through large-scale simulations, allows us to numerically assess various resource allocations (location and scheduling of ambulances). The objective is to find the optimal resource allocation, subject to economical and practical constraints.

The appointed candidate will get the opportunity to carry out collaborative research according to a mutually agreed research plan. The postdoc will become a part of the research group in mathematical statistics and be offered the opportunity to present the research at international conferences and to participate in joint workshops and seminars.

Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. In the vicinity there are plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities. This postdoctoral fellowship is financed by a tax-exempt scholarship from The Kempe Foundations that amounts to 312 000 SEK per year.
