Description The Department of Mathematics at the University of North Dakota seeks an assistant professor in statistics or mathematics with research interests in artificial intelligence and artificial neural networks. This is a 9-month, tenure track position contingent on availability of funding.

The Mathematics Department is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences and currently offers a BS in Mathematics, MS and MEd in Mathematics.

Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in North Dakota. Duties & Responsibilities The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 30% teaching; 60% research; 10% service effort. UND and the College of Arts & Sciences value diverse perspectives and seek applicants who are committed to the success of students from underrepresented backgrounds in Mathematics.

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses based on area of expertise. • Advise undergraduate students and advise graduate student research. • Establish a productive research program with emphasis on the mathematics of artificial intelligence and neural networks with applications appropriate for the UAS-Space Cohort. • Pursue research funding through grants and contracts, either individually, or collaboratively with colleagues across campus.

Required Competencies • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students. • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students. • Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department of Mathematics. • Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery.

Minimum Requirements • Earned Ph.D. in Statistics specializing in applications to deep learning or Ph.D. in Mathematics specializing in real or functional analysis, linear algebra, graph theory, or dynamical systems (or other branches of statistics or mathematics closely aligned with research in artificial intelligence and neural networks) by August 15, 2022 • Successful completion of criminal history records check In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications • At least 2 years of experience in a post-doctoral research position or equivalent industry experience • A record of involvement in seeking extramural research funding • A record of peer-reviewed publications in quality journals • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level • Experience or potential to administer federal grants such as those from the Department of Defense • Alignment with Space and/or Cybersecurity Initiatives • Experience working on multi-disciplinary research teams

Minimum Hiring Salary Competitive salary and start-up package.

Work Schedule/Start Date Position is full-time, benefited and exempt. Dates of initial contract are August 16, 2022 to May 15, 2023. Summer teaching may be available but is neither guaranteed nor required.
