MSP seeks PRODUCTION COPYEDITORS

We are MSP (Mathematical Sciences Publishers; https://msp.org), a scholar-led nonprofit publisher whose mission is to serve the math community through high-quality publishing at reasonable prices, and help others do the same. In addition to publishing our own growing portfolio of 15 journals in mathematics research and related areas, we prepare articles for publication for third-party journals, develop software for managing journals and peer review (EditFlow), and celebrate the people of mathematics (https://celebratio.org). Our work is appreciated by our readers, authors (https://msp.org/authquotes/), and users (https://msp.org/editflow/quotes/).

We seek to train and hire 2 or 3 production editors who will join a dozen colleagues in formatting and copyediting articles for publication, according to our high typesetting and writing standards.

We offer a friendly work environment with flexible hours, no need to relocate, comprehensive training, and frequent interaction with supportive colleagues though email, text chat and weekly zoom meetings.

The job requires
  • some background in mathematics or natural sciences
  • good knowledge of LaTeX
  • a strong command of written English
  • a computer and good familiarity with its operation
  • a willingness to learn thoroughly from written documentation
  • a reliable internet connection

The ideal candidate will also have
  • a graduate degree (or ABD) in mathematics, physics or related fields
  • thorough knowledge of LaTeX and some familiarity with TeX primitives
  • an appreciation of the fine points of typography
  • working knowledge of Unix-like command line (Linux, macOS)

The position will allow you to
  • work from home wherever you live (or want to live) and choose your own work schedule, provided you meet a commitment of 15 or more hours per week (more is better)
  • earn US$24/hour or more after initial training, which is unpaid and typically takes 30-40h over a period of two or more weeks
  • grow on the job with frequent feedback and periodical pay review
  • perfect marketable skills, both technical and human: further responsibilities accruing with experience may include interacting with authors, helping set policy, developing software work tools, and getting involved with other aspects of the company
