Washburn University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (Statistician) beginning August 1, 2022. This is a full-time 9-month, tenure-track position. A completed doctorate or recognition as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) is required for tenure-track appointment.

The selected candidate for this position will have a demonstrated commitment to pursuing teaching excellence at Washburn University, including a dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a dedicated group of faculty and staff who are committed to quality undergraduate education. The Department currently offers majors in Actuarial Science, Applied Statistics, Mathematics, and Mathematics Secondary Education, with minors in Applied Statistics, Mathematics, and Game Design. Washburn University is the only institution in the state of Kansas with a UCAP recognition from the Society of Actuaries. Required Qualifications: • One of the following degree qualifications (An ABD candidate and/or an Associate of the SOA will be considered pending completion of degree and/or fellowship. Degree and/or fellowship must be completed by August 2023.): o Doctorate in statistics o Doctorate in a mathematical science OR o Master’s degree with at least 18 hours in statistics/mathematics courses and recognition as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA). • Graduate training or work experience that provides the background skills to teach lower-level mathematics and statistics courses. • Graduate training or work experience that provides the background skills to teach upper-level statistics courses. • Demonstrated commitment to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: • Demonstrated experience teaching effectively at the collegiate level. • Successful completion of SOA exam(s). • A research program in statistics, actuarial science, or the pedagogy of teaching statistics.

Responsibilities: • Work directly with the Actuarial Science and Applied Statistics degree programs. • Fulfill teaching expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment. Teach 12 credit hours per semester (either in person or online) or a full workload as outlined in the faculty handbook. • Teach and develop undergraduate courses as assigned and as dependent upon department needs, which may include upper- and lower-division statistics courses, lower-division mathematics courses, courses related to Actuarial Science and Applied Statistics, and/or other courses consistent with the candidate’s training and interests. • Advise students. • Mentor undergraduate student research and/or supervise internships. • Fulfill scholarship expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment. • Fulfill service expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment by engaging in service activities in the department, university, and profession. • Engage in departmental activities and events.
