Teaching Professor
Mathematics

Xavier University is part of the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts and is strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission. We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

The faculty in the Department of Mathematics invite applications for two non-tenure-track Teaching Professors, starting in Fall 2022. The Teaching Professor position is renewable on an annual basis, with the potential after six years for promotion to Senior Teaching Professor with a rolling two-year renewable contract. Applicants must have a M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. in the mathematical sciences, completed no later than August 2022.

The Department of Mathematics at Xavier seeks to build a community that champions and promotes the mathematician in everyone. We are home to four undergraduate degree programs and offer minors in mathematics, statistics, and applied mathematics. Our department currently has 20 faculty members, four of whom are teaching professors. Class sizes are intentionally kept small: we believe that the best teaching can be done when there is close faculty-student interaction for discussion, exploration and thought. We desire colleagues who will further advance the culture of inquiry within our student body. Candidates must be committed to outstanding teaching in a liberal arts tradition of active learning, as well as service consistent with the University’s mission statement: “to educate each student intellectually, morally, and spiritually … as they cultivate lives of reflection, compassion and informed action.”

A Teaching Professor normally teaches introductory-level mathematics or statistics courses aimed at students not majoring in mathematics. The typical load is four courses each semester. A successful candidate will be expected to utilize innovative and effective approaches in the teaching of mathematics.

Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati, Ohio allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University 20 years in a row among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.

We welcome a broad spectrum of candidates, and particularly invite applications from women, ethnic and racial minorities, and other individuals who are underrepresented in the profession. Additionally, candidates who have worked with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students and who can contribute to our mission of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences and interests. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination on the basis of race, skin color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability.

A complete application includes a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a statement concerning the candidate’s personal practice of and aspirations for teaching; a statement on their experiences with diverse populations; graduate transcripts; and three letters of recommendation. These items should be submitted online at: http://www.mathjobs.org. To ensure full consideration, all application materials must be received by February 1, 2022.
