Position Description:

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Statistics to begin Fall 2023. Candidates must have or be completing a Ph.D. in Biostatistics or Statistics, or a closely related field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, etc. with a demonstrated interest and background in statistics and/or data science. They must have a strong commitment to and vision for excellence in teaching and research in an undergraduate liberal arts environment. We are especially interested in candidates who are enthusiastic to teach and develop a broad range of undergraduate statistics and data science courses, from the introductory to advanced level. See the catalog of MSCS courses for current course descriptions. We are open to scholarly interests from a wide range of areas, including but not limited to: machine learning, computational statistics, advanced statistical modeling, and data science.

At Macalester College, diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our educational mission and values. We are committed to the institutional change required for visioning and realizing a more equitable and socially just college and society. In this spirit, we pride ourselves on our inclusive and innovative curriculum and pedagogy (e.g. active learning, real world applications, computing in R). Macalester also provides an attractive environment for quantitative scientists. Our joint department offers majors in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science. We foster close interdisciplinary relationships with departments such as Biology, Political Science, and Theater and Dance, teach more than 60% of the student body in our introductory statistics and data science courses, and have a vibrant record of undergraduate research.

Macalester faculty teach five semester course sections per year (typically two to three distinct courses), supervise senior capstone presentations and honors theses, advise students in their curricular and career choices, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and engage in pedagogical, curricular, and extracurricular departmental activities. During their first year of the appointment, new faculty teach four courses and attend a weekly new faculty development seminar. The Macalester Faculty Handbook details expectations for tenure and promotion.
