The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the Faculty of Science at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Actuarial Science at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023.

 

The Department views this position as a key step towards continuing to build York University into one of the top universities in Canada for Actuarial Science, and more generally in risk management and insurance, in research reputation and in post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate training. Our vision is for Actuarial Science to be a common thread for building and developing connections that bring together great researchers from across the university, top graduate and undergraduate students, and industrial partners, and for Actuarial Science to be the focus of outstanding interdisciplinary and applied research that further raises York’s reputation and prestige.

 

Candidate Qualifications:

 

Degree: For appointment, a PhD in Actuarial Science, or Mathematics, or Statistics (or a dissertation in a related area) and a clearly articulated program of research, specializing in Actuarial Science are required. Also, a professional designation of Associate from one of the SoA / CAS / CIA / IFoA / IAA (or equivalent) and evidence of active pursuit of Fellowship by the date of appointment is required; a professional designation of Fellow from one of the SoA / CAS / CIA / IFoA / IAA (or equivalent) is an important asset. Furthermore, career-stage appropriate excellence in Actuarial research and in teaching as well as commitment to achieving excellence in service (evidence of excellence for appointment at the Full Professor level) to the Actuarial Profession in Canada and globally are required.

 

·      Research/Practice Expertise:

o  The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and externally funded research at the highest level.

o  Candidates must show research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) in top-ranked and field-relevant journals; presentations at major conferences; an exceptional record of recent scholarly funding; a record of supervision of undergraduate and graduate students; substantial and ongoing involvement within professional and scientific communities; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high international standing.

o  A record of professional experience in industry will be given additional weight when comparing candidates with similar research credentials

·      Teaching:

o  Excellence in teaching, as evident in: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations (e.g., high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning); integrated Actuarial Science and Data Science / Business / Economics / Accounting / Computer Science / Risk Management curricula; teaching evaluations (optional); strong letters of reference.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
