The Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University seeks applicants for a faculty position at the rank of lecturer, senior lecturer, or distinguished senior lecturer with a start date of July 1, 2023.

The initial appointment is for a 3-year period (renewable with potential for promotion and longer-term contracts). The position involves teaching four undergraduate courses per year, academic advising, and engaging with the department’s and the university’s intellectual culture. Lecturers participate fully in faculty meetings and departmental initiatives. The teaching for this position will focus primarily on our first- and second-year courses, including statistics, though there may also be opportunities to teach upper-level undergraduate courses, depending on expertise and department needs. We strive to build a diverse and inclusive environment for all members of our community, and are particularly interested in candidates whose experience, teaching, service, or scholarship can further these efforts. Our department’s vision and action plan for diversity fits within Brown’s broader commitment to this work.

The department has 22 tenure-stream and 1 lecturer-stream faculty members and offers a vibrant community for both research and teaching. We are a founding partner of Brown’s Data Science Initiative and participate in the NSF-funded Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics.

Brown University is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic global community; as an EEO/AA employer, Brown considers applicants for employment without regard to, and does not discriminate on the basis of, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, race, protected veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status. The Division of Applied Mathematics similarly values diversity and inclusion as essential to achieving excellence and is committed to building a diverse faculty: we strongly encourage women, members of underrepresented groups, and those who can contribute to the excellence, diversity, and inclusivity of our academic community to apply. We ask candidates to outline any relevant experience, including work with diverse constituents, and plans in their applications. (For additional information about the university's and department's commitment to diversity and inclusion, see http://www.brown.edu/about/administration/institutional-diversity/pathways and https://appliedmath.brown.edu/diversity-equity-and-inclusion.)

In selecting candidates, we will consider quality and effectiveness of teaching, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and compatibility with the teaching needs and interests of the department, as well as potential for effective participation in department or university activities. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the start of the position.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a CV, a teaching statement, a diversity statement (which can be included in the teaching statement), and a research statement (or a statement describing other significant professional activities beyond classroom instruction). The diversity statement should summarize your past and planned contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which may arise from teaching/mentoring, outreach, lived experience, or other activities.

Candidates must also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be submitted through the application website.

Consideration of applications will begin on December 5, 2022. Inquiries should be sent electronically to Prof Matthew Harrison (matthew_harrison@brown.edu).
