Instructor or Assistant Professor of Secondary Mathematics Education

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications for a Continuing Track faculty member at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor. The person in this position will devote most of their time to teaching and service in the Secondary Mathematics Education program, with some opportunity for scholarship for those with a PhD. The Secondary Math Education program prepares teacher candidates for Grades 7-12 certification through rigorous coursework and multiple field experiences, including an innovative early field experience in an undergraduate mathematics course. Program graduates are highly sought after in the state and region, and multiple students have won prestigious scholarships, awards, and fellowships. Mathematics educators in the department, university, and state are part of an active, collaborative mathematics education community.

The Continuing Track (CT) is UD’s permanent, non-tenure track career path; CT faculty work on a 9-month contract. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time, as well as many of the same benefits as tenure-track and tenured faculty, such as identical titles, a parallel promotion track, sabbaticals, and shared faculty governance. QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will have a degree and/or meaningful experience in the field of mathematics education.

Minimum requirements:

● An advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) to be completed by the start date of the appointment, ● EITHER in Mathematics Education or a closely related field, with at least 12 credits of graduate-level coursework in mathematics; ● OR in Mathematics or a closely related field with significant (at least two years) demonstrated experience in teaching and working with prospective or practicing secondary mathematics teachers;

● Experience as the instructor of record for a mathematics or mathematics education course;

● Experience working with prospective or practicing mathematics teachers;

● A strong commitment to implementing evidence-based pedagogical practices and developing excellence in teaching both in oneself and in prospective teachers;

● A strong commitment to equity, access, and success for all students;

● A strong commitment to carrying out service activities that require organization, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate and network with others;

● Experience with developing or applying assessment rubrics;

● (For applicants with a doctoral degree) A record of scholarship and plans for continued engagement in mathematics education research or scholarship of teaching and learning.

Preferred qualifications:

● Experience teaching mathematics content and pedagogy courses for prospective secondary teachers;

● Experience in recruitment and retention of teacher candidates;

● Experience with program accreditation (i.e., CAEP/NCTM Standards for Mathematics Teacher Preparation);

● Experience with mentoring and/or advising students.

Job Responsibilities will include:

● Teaching mathematics content and pedagogy courses for prospective secondary teachers;

● Collaborating with program faculty and community groups to recruit and retain diverse cohorts of prospective teachers;

● Administering accreditation assessments and participating in the management of the CAEP accreditation process and other ancillary programmatic tasks;

● Developing, refining, and applying rubrics to make judgements about the extent to which teacher candidates have achieved particular standards;

● Teaching introductory mathematics courses, as needed.
