Position: Truman State University invites applications for a tenure-track position to begin August 2023. The position is a shared position between the Mathematics and Statistics departments, and is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities: Provide classroom instruction in a variety of courses for both mathematics and statistics majors and non-majors, including courses that support the liberal arts and sciences, non-major support courses, and upper-level major courses; Advise and mentor mathematics majors; conduct research and mentor undergraduate students, including the supervision of student capstone projects and other student research projects; provide service to the department, university, and community; provide instruction in online graduate data science courses; advise and mentor undergraduate and Master’s-level Statistics and Data Science students, including supervising graduate thesis projects.

Required Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics or data science or a related field with at least 18 graduate credits in mathematics is required, and at least 18 graduate credits in statistics or data science. (ABD candidates will be considered with an expected Ph.D. completion prior to the start of the next contract date in August 2024.)

Candidates will be evaluated on demonstrated potential for and evidence of excellence in teaching; evidence of strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to teach a variety of new and existing mathematics courses, especially courses in areas of applied mathematics; the ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including the supervision of capstone projects, master's theses and other research projects; ability to teach multiple graduate courses taught within the professional data science and analytic storytelling program, using modern statistical software (including R); and the desire and ability to support Truman’s liberal arts and sciences mission. Programs: The Department of Mathematics is part of the School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University. The department has 11 faculty members and approximately 100 students in the undergraduate major, graduating approximately 25 mathematics students yearly. The department also offers minors in Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, and Actuarial Science, and provides classes to support Truman’s Liberal Arts Curriculum as well as majors in a variety of disciplines including education, business, and the sciences. Opportunities for faculty members to pursue interdisciplinary teaching and research exist within the School and as part of the University Liberal Arts Curriculum. The Department of Statistics at Truman State University has, in addition to an undergraduate statistics major with concentrations in classical statistics and data science, recently launched a Professional Masters Degree in Data Science and Analytic Storytelling. The department has 10 full-time faculty members with a variety of specialties who support our programs and campus-wide needs with over 50 sections of undergraduate statistics and 20 sections of graduate data science courses annually. We also offer an undergraduate Statistics Minor and actively support an Actuarial Science minor, statistically-related majors across campus, and other interdisciplinary areas such as environmental science.
