The Westlake Fellows Program, launched by Westlake University in 2022, aims to recognize exceptional newly minted PhDs working as principal investigators on creative and pioneering research in science and engineering. The first-round of applications for 2023 is now open. As of October 28, 2022, we will begin accepting nominations and/or applications. Westlake Fellows Program:

Westlake University initiated the Westlake Fellows Program to recognize the contributions of emerging and outstanding scholars worldwide, to foster innovative and collaborative research in science and engineering, and to create a vibrant ecosystem for international collaborations that lead to the free exchange of ideas and enduring bonds between institutions.

The Program offers two types of fellowships for scholars at different career stages, namely Westlake Fellowships and Westlake Visiting Professorships:

1. Westlake Fellowships seek exceptional scientists of great promise in their early careers whom we wish to attract to Westlake, and may lead to subsequent tenure/tenure-track faculty appointments. We will provide them with the opportunity to start their own research independently or semi-independently and pursue cutting-edge research, along with access to the outstanding technical and scientific resources at Westlake. The initial three-year appointment can be extended for up to three additional years with approval, for a total of six years.

2. Westlake Visiting Professorships, including Westlake Senior Fellows and Westlake Distinguished Fellows, aim to bring outstanding assistant/associate professors or brilliant full professors (or equivalent) to Westlake on a short-term basis for collaborative research interactions within Westlake's interdisciplinary community.

Eligibility

- About to be awarded or within two years of obtaining a doctoral degree (Doctorate must be received before the fellowship begins)

- Haven’t been employed as an assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor (or equivalent)

Terms of Appointment

- A three-year term with a negotiable start date

- An internationally competitive salary, on-campus apartment, and travel allowances

- A research start-up fund provided annually, an office, and dedicated laboratory space

- A high-end medical care plan for the entire family and schooling assistance for children

2. Westlake Visiting Professors

Eligibility

  - Westlake Senior Fellows: assistant or associate professors (or equivalent) at institutions around the world

  - Westlake Distinguished Fellows: full professor (or equivalent) at institutions around the world

Terms of Visit

  - Visit may range from a minimum of one week to a maximum of one year with a negotiable start date

  - A prorated stipend, accommodation, and transportation

How to Apply

    Westlake Senior Fellows shall be nominated by Westlake faculty members. Westlake Distinguished Fellows shall be nominated by the Westlake community including the Advisory and Executive Committee of the Program and the University Academic Committee. Direct applications and self-nominations are not accepted.
