Supervision Received: The Assistant Professor of Data Science reports to the Department Chair of Computer and Information Science and the Department Chair of Mathematics.

General Statement of Duties and Summary of Interconnected Departments: Westfield is a great place to work, learn and grow. Our program spans two departments (Computer and Information Science and Mathematics) that together are advancing an innovative and exciting program of study in this field.

In addition to the new Data Science program, Westfield State's Department of Computer and Information Science (CAIS) also supports majors in both Computer Science and Computer Information Systems as well as a CAIS minor with three available tracks. Our tight-knit community is active, with our Programming team placing second in this spring's CCSC-NE programming competition and volunteer opportunities available for sharing knowledge with classmates, the university, and the community. In the last year, our students have landed internships and jobs with some of the country's top technology companies. We provide a supportive community, where faculty and students work together on learning the latest technologies, always with a focus on helping each individual achieve their personal goals.

The Department of Mathematics at Westfield State University supports active major and minor programs, teacher education programs, vibrant extracurricular mathematics student activities, undergraduate research, actuarial program, and internship programs. Departmental research and scholarship span many areas of mathematics, mathematics education, and teacher education. Our faculty members provide scholarship and campus-wide leadership in the use of cooperative learning, teaching with technology, inquiry based and guided discovery learning, and other areas of teaching innovation.

(This is a joint position between the Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Mathematics.)

The Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Mathematics at Westfield State University invite applications for a joint tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in the Fall of 2023. We seek an individual with energy, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to both teaching and further improving the Data Science program curriculum. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to make a real contribution to the departments' programs and be recognized and appreciated for that contribution.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential:
  • Teach courses in both Computer Information Science and Mathematics.
  • Work on gradually assessing and improving the curriculum and other aspects of our Data Science program.
  • Engage in continuous scholarship and also provide service to the department and the university.
  • Perform academic advising for some of the students in the programs

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:
  • Must have an earned Ph.D. in Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or other closely related field, with an expertise in data science. Ph.D. should be already earned or anticipated by September of 2024.
  • Have knowledge and experience in the following areas: artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, data mining, linear programming, and statistics.
  • Fluent in one or more programming languages used to manipulate large amounts of data (such as Python or R) with proficiency in popular data science and machine learning libraries, and have a high level of comfort in using these to teach courses.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education and a broad potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Salary:
For the majority of new employees, the minimum starting salary will apply. Specific salary for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining and state policies and procedures.
