Job description
The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions”, funded by an NWO Open Competition ENW - XL grant, offers up to six PhD positions in arithmetic geometry spread across three universities: University of Groningen, Leiden University, and Utrecht University. As a PhD student you will carry out mathematical research in the context of the research program “Rational points: new dimensions”. You will be part of a collaborative research team led by Martin Bright, Valentijn Karemaker, Ronald van Luijk, Steffen Müller, Marta Pieropan and Cecília Salgado. In addition, you are expected to carry out some work as a teaching assistant within the department of your home university.

Qualifications
You are expected to have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, or to obtain such a degree before the starting date of the PhD project. A working proficiency in English will be necessary, as well as a collaborative and enterprising attitude towards research in mathematics. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

Offer
You will be employed at one of the following institutions: the University of Groningen, Leiden University, and Utrecht University; and you will work under the supervision of at least two consortium leaders. Each of the three consortium institutions has a very active algebraic geometry and number theory research group: Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht. You will have ample opportunity to participate in events organised by the consortium as well as other national events. Funding is also available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.

We offer:

In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, the proposed home institutions have a number of own arrangements ranging from professional development and leave arrangements to sports.

About the organisation
The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” is a research group
on the arithmetic of rational points, based at the Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen, the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University and the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University.

The mathematical community in the Netherlands is tight-knit. The consortium members interact regularly with experts at universities other than those involved in the consortium, such as the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Radboud University in Nijmegen. These interactions are also facilitated by the monthly Intercity Number Theory Seminar, the Intercity Geometry Seminar, the twice-annual DIAMANT Symposium, and the twice-annual GQT School and Colloquium. We also keep in touch with our colleagues in Belgium through the “Getaltheorie in het Vlakke Land” seminar and the Belgian-Dutch Algebraic Geometry Seminar.

Diversity and inclusion
The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” commits to operating in accordance with the values of diversity and inclusion. Everyone deserves to be respected and feel at home in our research community, regardless of differences in background, experiences, perspectives, and identities. These values are reflected by the three host institutions' diversity policies: Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht. Diversity among consortium members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of research. We therefore particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented groups to apply.
