The Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Institute are looking for a Full professor in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory (0.8-1.0 fte)

The Mathematical Institute of Leiden University is inviting applications for a full professorship within the Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory group. We are looking for talented individuals, with a strong track record in developing original lines of research and demonstrated leadership skills. Candidates from groups that are currently underrepresented in the field are explicitly invited to apply.

Examples of important research topics that would fit well include (in no particular order):
  • Analytic number theory
  • Differential geometry
  • Algebraic number theory
  • Arithmetic algebraic geometry
  • Algorithmic number theory
  • Diophantine approximation
  • Algebraic geometry
  • Cryptography, in particular post-quantum cryptography
  • Homotopy theoretical methods in geometry
  • Representation theory, in particular in connection with the Langlands program
However, we are open to the introduction of other topics and themes as well. 

Key responsibilities
As the holder of this position, you will:
  • Continue to develop original lines of research;
  • Acquire research grants to support these research lines;
  • Be an active and inspiring advisor for bachelor and master students and PhD candidates;
  • Play a leading role in our teaching program, which includes developing the curriculum;
  • Contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the institute.
Selection criteria
As we assess your application, we will be looking for:
  • A proven track record of excellence in research;
  • Demonstrated experience in the establishment of (international) research programs and the coordination of scientific research; 
  • An established ability to attract prestigious national and international grants;
  • Strong communicative, collaborative and leadership skills;
  • A strong track record as an inspiring teacher and supervisor.
Additional requirements to fulfill after hiring
  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you do not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, you must be willing to obtain this qualification within a period of two years;
  • Newly hired staff not already holding a Dutch language proficiency diploma at level B2 or better, are required to obtain such a diploma within two years.
Employment conditions 
The intended starting date for the position is September 1st 2023, but this is flexible. You will be appointed in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is between € 6,099.- and € 10,721.- depending on your qualifications and experience.
