Position Description 

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (SIP) rank appointment in the undergraduate program to serve as Director of Student Engagement. This is a full-time leadership position that offers opportunities for classroom teaching, and intellectual leadership in management of instructional personnel. The initial three-year appointment is expected to begin on 9/1/2023 and is renewable with opportunity for promotion. This is a career-track position with competitive salary and benefits. Appointment will be as Assistant, Associate, or Full Senior Instructional Professor based on experience. 

 A core responsibility of this role is to focus on issues related to the culture of the undergraduate program. Duties may include surveying our students, researching the pros and cons of approaches at peer institutions, and making recommendations to our undergraduate committee as well as to individual instructors and instructional professors. 

 The appointee will annually teach three courses, drawn primarily from the required core courses in our undergraduate program from calculus through multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis, and abstract algebra, depending on program needs. 

 In the administrative leadership role, the appointee will, in collaboration with a senior faculty member, directly supervise and evaluate other teaching personnel and manage their hiring, reappointments, and promotions; develop new programming and conduct one-on-one meetings to assist in the pedagogical training of all instructors; train academic appointees and compile placement data; and contribute to program operations, staff hiring, student recruitment, and the creation of an alumni network. The appointee will work closely with the graduate program staff to collaborate with various clubs and extracurricular activities to foster a better environment of learning and research. 

Finally, the appointee will participate on the leadership team that consists of the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the co-directors and will help with student placement, advising, and managing. 

 The position includes support and time for professional development. 

Qualifications

A PhD in mathematics or closely related field is required.
