• Full time fixed term for 2 years. Located on the Camperdown Campus at the School of Mathematics and Statistics • Opportunity to develop new mathematical models for atherosclerotic plaques • Base Salary, Level A $98,645 to 105,305 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity We seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate – Mathematical Biology to work on the project, “Space, time and boundary conditions: Mathematics for evolving plaques,” funded by the Australian Research Council. The project aims to create new mathematical theory to model the morphology of atherosclerotic plaques, which cause heart attacks and strokes, as plaques grow or regress.

The successful candidate will work on formulating, analysing and solving multiphase models for the development of atherosclerotic plaques, with a focus on immune cell behaviour and lipid trafficking. These models will be formulated as partial differential equations, often with moving boundaries.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• do research in the School of Mathematics and Statistics under the supervision of Prof Mary Myerscough • participate in research group meetings and other activities • formulate mathematical models for the growth of atherosclerotic plaques using a multiphase framework • perform a mathematical analysis of these models where possible • solve the resulting sets of partial differential equations computationally and interpret results • communicate the outcomes of this work by writing papers and making presentations.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate – Mathematical Biology who has:

• a PhD (or near completion) in mathematics or a cognate area • relevant expertise in mathematical biology, particularly in differential equation modelling • demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision • the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals • a strong track record of publishing their research • a demonstrated ability to complete work in timely fashion and to write up results for publication.
